Buy Used Unlocked Gsm Phones

An unlocked phone is a cell phone that is not tied to a particular carrier. That way, you can shop for carriers and phone plans more freely. You get to choose your cell phone independently from choosing your carrier.

Many people prefer unlocked devices so they have more freedom. If you frequently travel internationally or want to have two data plans for business, having an unlocked phone makes it much easier to switch between an international plan and a U.S. plan or between multiple U.S. plans. You can simply switch out the SIM card and use whatever your preferred plan is at the time.

You get more control over your complete phone plan when you purchase a used unlocked cell phone. You can contact any carrier you are interested in and see what kind of plans they offer for unlocked, preowned phones.

Used phones give you the freedom to test out a brand or model's features without committing. You also keep a secondhand phone out of a landfill when you buy used. Together, we help reduce the amount of e-waste globally, and you get a quality unlocked cell phone for cheap!

MetroPCS completed its merger with T-Mobile last month, but the two continue to operate as separate brands. Just this morning, however, MetroPCS quietly debuted its new Bring Your Own Phone program, which allows subscribers to use unlocked GSM phones on the carriers' combined networks.

You can now bring your unlocked GSM phones to receive MetroPCS service. This is significant because it marks the first time that MetroPCS, which was CDMA-only before the merger, is using T-Mobile's GSM network.

The carrier is accepting unlocked iPhones, Android phones, Windows phones, and certain feature phones, but not BlackBerrys, tablets, or hotspots. To find out if your phone is compatible, check here: metropcs.com/keepyourphone(Opens in a new window).

Once you've unlocked your phone, you must purchase a MetroPCS-branded SIM card in order to get your phone on the network. You can even port your old phone number from your previous carrier as long as you're free of any contractual obligations.

Sources have told us that MetroPCS will be adding two new GSM phones to its lineup as well. We aren't sure what they are, but rumors have pegged them as the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit and the LG Optimus L9. We've already reviewed the Optimus L9 on T-Mobile, which managed to nab a spot on our list of The Best Android Phones for its mix of price and performance. We haven't reviewed the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit yet, but it sort of looks to fall somewhere between the Samsung Galaxy S II and Galaxy S III, spec-wise.

Also, locked phones prevent theft. Unlocked phones are more likely to be sold illegally or used overseas with different carriers. Verizon locks its new phones as a security precaution. (Users can unlock them; more on that below.)

To ensure voice and data work properly, only select BYOD devices with approved hardware and software for use on the Verizon Wireless network. To see whether your unlocked phone meets the criteria, check our Bring Your Own Device page.

If you're in the market for a new smartphone, you'll almost certainly come across the term "unlocked phone." What exactly is an unlocked phone, and how can you tell if it's unlocked Do you even want an unlocked phone, and if so, is it secure to u
